Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy Wall Hangings

Made in the USA in the 1970’s

Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy, just their names gives one a warm feeling inside. These pictures show Ann in a bright yellow jumper and her trademark gingham in the garden reaching for a watering can. Andy, wearing bib overalls, a gingham shirt, and blue cap  is hard at work hoeing the garden with his bluebird friends at his side.  The pictures are mounted on particle wood boards. Both boards measure 20 inches long by 16 inches wide. Big enough to be seen. There are original holes in the back of each making them easy to hang in the nursery. 

Raggedy Ann is a character created by Johnny Gruelle in a series of books from the early 1900’s he wrote and illustrated. Raggedy Andy was introduced in 1920.

Crocheted Cross Bookmarks

Hi, all! It’s been a while since my last post but I am here with a quick little something to share. A while ago I was telling my awesome Lymphatic Drainage Guru about my mission trips and I inspired her. She is planning to go on one this year. What a rush! I love inspiring others. Well, as we were talking she said she wanted to bring something she could hand out; something the people could put in their Bibles….A bookmark, of course, so I volunteered to make them….30 of them.

Well I looked around for patterns but none suited me so I reworked a bracelet pattern I found.

Her pattern, for a cross-wise bracelet is HERE

I loved the stitches so here is my pattern for a crocheted cross bookmark 4 inches long and 2 inches across:

Steel crochet hook size 2/2.25mm

Crochet Cotton thread size 3 (Aunt Lydia’s or Bernat)

Skill level: Beginner

Ch3, hdc 3rd ch from hook, ch1, 2 hdc ( all in the same space)
Every other one***
*turn, slip stitch until you and in the ch1 space, ch2,1hdc,ch1,2hdc* repeat until you have the length desired (approximately 15 rows).

attach the yarn to the space between the 5 and 6 shells.  *ch2,hdc,ch1, 2hdc, turn sl stitch to ch1 space* repeat 3 times (3 shells).
repeat the step above on the other side of the cross.

Weave in the ends. Starch and let the dry.

That’s it. The cross takes less than 1 hour to crochet and very little cotton thread.

A nice little gift that’s easy to make.

Good morning, everyone! Hope your week is going well. I’ve had a trying week but stitching seems to be my therapy. After a few minutes at the machine or doing some handwork and I feel so much better. Sweet Floral Bunny Dish Towel Friday’s Freebie

Hi, all! Eileen from GoofingOff Sewing here. I finally finished working on the bird ornaments for the Relay for Life Reception in Gainesville, FL T’ONIGHT….nothing like waiting until the last minute…..and have a chance to get caught up with other things….like life. Rocking the 80’s: 5 Patterns to Sew and Get the Look

Hi! I’m Eileen from GoofingOff Sewing bringing a little step back in time…..the 1980’s.

Mention 80’s fashion to folks who lived through it and the results are a mixed bag. One person I asked emphatically said “I hated it!” That surprised me because I thought she had the look down pat. She lived in the city and wore the city fashions…..fitted leather pants with straight legs and loose-fitting blouses with over-extended shoulders (shoulder pads out to there!). I loved the 80’s. I was a bit of a country girl and enjoyed the soft side…..Victorian inspired blouses with ruffles and lace, denim everything for a country look. Here’s 5 patterns to get the 80’s look.

Oh, yes, jumpsuits. Got to have one….at least one. Button front with straight legs or shorts for the summer.

Pants were fitted at the waist and meant to hang straight. No perky backside look….flat butt.

Thanks to the success of the movie “Urban Cowboy” (ride that bull, honey) country music had a resurgence. We learned to dance the Cotton-Eyed Joe and Texas Two Step while wearing jeans and boots.

And then there was the movie “Flashdance” and all of a sudden everyone was wearing sweats and trying to look like a dancer who hadn’t made the big time yet. Sweats were everywhere on everyone.

DIY Slider Casters: Tuesday’s Tutorial

About a week ago the hubby brought home a new member to the family….a cockatiel. Cute little guy, lots of color, a bit of personality, and, unfortunately, a big mess. Cockatiels are not known for neat and clean. The floor around his cage is full of seed and with my trunk on the floor next to the cage, cleaning up is a challenge, starting first with moving the trunk easily without scratching the floor. 

I already bought casters for the furniture but there never seems to be enough so I thought I should make my own. I decided to use scrap wood (plywood or T-one-eleven), craft felt, adhesive, and foam sheets.

I went to the hubby’s scrap pile and found these pieces of wood. Not too wide. Too long but cut into smaller lengths they might work.

I trimmed up the wood and smoothed the edges. I don’t want splinters.

I used foam sheets leftover from another project. Color didn’t matter since the casters would be under the trunk. Someone would have to be pretty snoopy to notice.

 

 

 

 

I cut the foam to the size of the wood by using the wood as a template.

The foam is thin enough to use paper cutting scissors. It is adhesive backed so applying it to the wood is easy.

 

 

 

Now the felt……

Using the wood again as templates I used a pen to carefully mark my cutting lines then cut the felt strips to size.

I applied my adhesive (I used Loctite Stik n’Seal No Mess) to the wood and then applied the felt.

 

Voila! The new casters are ready to slide the trunk across my hardwood floor easily.

 

Now to clean up after my fine, feathered friend. Pets, got to love them.

New Listings for Summer Sewing

I know there are parts of the US still shaking off the effects of the last snowfall but here in the south summer came early. I found some amazing patterns just right for the summer and had to share them.

In my world summer mean travel, trips to the movies or the ice cream shop with the grands, and lunch with the ladies at the stitch shop……so clothes that travel well (little or no wrinkles in the suitcase), little dresses for little girls (when that special occasion out of ice cream cones), or a little spiffy up but not too spiffy. I think these patterns meet those specifications.

Simplicity 1358. 

This pattern has neckline and hemline variation…..and it’s a knit dress, multi-sized knit dress. The right fabric means no wrinkles. Yahoo! The dress’s lines make this flattering for most figures.

Simplicity 1146 

This adorable girls’ dress is also a knit. So cute!

New Look 6316

I love little girls’ dresses! This pattern has several variations….a wardrobe in one pattern. Multi sized from New Born to Large….Modern to traditional. Good for new baby gift sewing, too.

 

New Look 6319

Cute party dress! Just the right amount of ruffles without being too much. The jacket gives it a special look so it’s just right for a Daddy-daughter dance or other special occasion.

 

Simplicity 1458

Princess seams, side panels, and a-line flare make this dress flattering for everyone. It also has larger cup sizes for the more “ahem” endowed among us.

Last, but not least, Simplicity 1316, lovely pullover tops pretty enough for lunch with the ladies.
